Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak is scheduled to undergo gall bladder surgery Saturday in Germany, state media reported. There has been a lot of talk about drugs in rugby league ever since Terry Newton was handed a two-year ban for testing positive. I personally don't think there is a drug problem within our sport, but you have to assume cheating does occur. To what degree, I don't know, but until we have a drug-testing procedure with no loopholes, people will be able to say what they like without evidence to the contrary.

Acting Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority chief executive Richard Ings said yesterday the AFL was leading the way by agreeing to blood-test its athletes this season for HGH and Continuous Erythropoiesis Receptor Activator - a new synthetic variant of the blood-boosting drug erythropoietin. "ASADA considers the AFL 2010 anti-doping program to be the gold standard of anti-doping programs in Australian sport," Ings said. The AFL indicated that all new players would be tested at least once this year.

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. An attorney hired by Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger disputed a college student's claim that the two-time Super Bowl winner sexually assaulted her at a Georgia nightclub. The 20-year-old told police Roethlisberger, who had been out barhopping with friends, assaulted her early Friday. Roethlisberger has not been charged.

The United Kingdom Anti-Doping authority announced a two-year ban on Feb. 23 for rugby player Terry Newton, saying he had tested positive and was the first athlete suspended for using HGH.

Boston Bruins center Marc Savard has been diagnosed with a grade two concussion after being leveled by a blindside hit by Pittsburgh's Matt Cooke in Sunday's game. General manager Peter Chiarelli said that team doctor Peter Asnis and a concussion specialist at Massachusetts General Hospital evaluated and diagnosed Savard. The Bruins medical staff will continue to monitor and evaluate Savard for up to five days before they offer an update on his prognosis.
